Yeah, like a lot of others, this one hit close to home. I'd like to consider myself a discerning music fan, but will admit I have (in the past, and somewhat present) had a bit too much of a closed mind towards certain things. The two (not so) little (anymore) girls in the back carrying my name introduced me to many good things (and maybe just as many not so good). I'd say the biggest thing they did was make me less guarded towards things I would've quickly dismissed earlier.
Yeah totally. Growing up as a musician and really defining myself by music and the weird cool music I discovered, made it very hard to accept that there was anything redeemable about the music on the radio that everyone listened to. But I was wrong! Though obviously a lot of pop is total crap.
As the dad of two now 13 and 11-yr old girls I couldn't relate harder to this entire episode and absolutely loved having you run through all the same radio hits I've listened to every soccer carpool. Thank you for doing this service. My ONLY requested cut would be Kidz Bob...which is a bridge too far I think. Aside from that, fantastic episode and love hearing dissections of music from all directions and perspectives. Keep up the great work! Ha!
This was a riot. I laughed out loud at the defending Reputation at a cocktail party bit. And the mailchimp stadium bit.
I don’t think my older kids (8 and 6) know pop radio is a thing, which I feel bad about now. They mostly request songs that soundtrack trick shot videos they watch on YouTube (imagine dragons is in that rotation). Other than that I just sneak in snobby indie tunes (my middle just asked me to add Love Takes Miles onto his playlist, which I feel good about). You’re making me realize I should give them the full dose of the cultural moment.
I loved this show. I listen to the radio all the time in the car and hey a good song is a good song! I like listening for the “popular” gems. Lots of gems here and thank you for the Kool Keith reminder!
Have been on a parallel journey with my kids in the car and I so appreciated the way you captured it. I can say from experience that the Imagine Dragons concert my son insisted we go at age twelve was exhilarating. Now that he is fifteen and only listens to 90s alt rock I kind of miss it.
Another great episode! I have wide and varied music interests and some of these pop tracks are guilty pleasures. However, I do disagree on Billie Eilish. Not a fan.
Thanks Brandon - glad you enjoyed it. Yeah I don’t love all the Billie Eilish stuff but I do think she (and her brother) are wildly creative and adventurous. I particularly love her slow songs like that one from Barbie (lWhat was I made for”)
No need for an intervention but I do think we need to send Claire's and Starbucks gift cards.

So yeah, this one resonated. Thanks!

Hey martin - yeah it was a very fun episode to make. And you are right, that kidz bop stuff is the pits. Glad you enjoyed the episode. ✌️

Ha thanks pat - glad you enjoyed the episode. I’m sure yours will discover the wonders of pop radio soon enough!
Oh no, not Dance Monkey 🙉 😂

Yeah it was really fun to revisit all this stuff. And definitely some great music in there - maybe not Dance Monkey…

Awesome yeah I bet imagine dragons was wild. Taking a kid to those huge concerts is such a thrill
