Chalino Sanchez: Nieves de Enero
I first heard Chalino Sanchez in 2019 when my family and I were living temporarily on Staten Island at my wife’s grandfather’s boyhood home (long story). We were at a Mexican restaurant and there was this amazing music playing. Chalino Sanchez! What a voice — so unpolished and powerful. I only wish I knew what he was singing about. Tragically, Sanchez was murdered by cartel members in 1992 at age 31. The stories of his death and other murder attempts have almost overshadowed his music, but his music should really not be missed.
