Music for Your Week: ‘Don’t Knock Indie Rock’
Hi - I’m so glad people are enjoying last week’s episode about indie rock and Pitchfork etc..I had no absolutely idea this was such a hot topic. Wow.
So I made a LONG expanded playlist of what we covered. And I can’t stop listening to it.
I’d honestly forgotten how great a lot of this music is, so it’s been very fun for me to revisit it all. That pic above is Beach House kicking butt on Juan’s Basement—the show I mentioned in last week’s episode.
That’s Bradford Cox of Deerhunter above, playing a Vox Phantom guitar. Whenever someone plays one of those, I assume it’s a tip of the hat to Ian Curtis of Joy Division (he famously played a white one).
Anyway, to keep the party going, this week I’ve got a great playlist that includes everything from last week’s episode, plus lots more. Above is Lower Dens, led by the amazing Jana Hunter. Lots of them on this playlist.
That’s Anohni above with the hat on. One of the most moving voices in popular music in the last thousand years. Anohni really has no place being categorized as ‘indie rock’ — she’s in this grouping in my head just because I found her music at the same time I found all the other stuff here.
*Also a note that Joanna Newsom is not on Spotify so is not on the Spotify version of this playlist (she is on the Apple playlist though). So, if you’re a Spotify person, you’ll have to get your Newsom fix elsewhere.
