Ok, this week: 3 fantastic contemporary instrumental albums:

  1. Blake Mills/Pino Palladino: Notes with Attachments (2021)

I heard a little bit of this album when it first came out in 2021, but it didn’t really connect with me. I could tell it was interesting, but somehow I felt like it wasn’t for me, so I didn’t dig very deep.

I think maybe I just wasn’t ready.

On the Walkmen tour last year, as I rumbled around the world on various trains, planes and automobiles I had a hankering to have something fresh and exciting in my headphones, so I decided to give this thing another shot.

Once I gave it my full attention, it started to work its magic on me and I got hooked. Oh man, what a great and unusual album. This music is deep and rich and unlike anything else I know, and it became my private soundtrack for that entire tour.

It’s kinda like when you stand in front of a big abstract painting you’ve never seen before and you have no idea what it is or what it’s supposed to mean and you’re like, “What the f*ck is that? I love that and I have no idea why.” It’s a rare and thrilling feeling.
