Midsummer Classical Solo Piano

Mitsuko Uchida

Hello -

I started this playlist in 2024, and between this and the Music for Flying playlist, these are honestly the two I return to most.

I’d say Music for Flying is more of a long, gentle escape—a ticket to the land of peace and reflection. This one does that too, but I think it asks a little more of you. It goes deeper and is more purely about listening. Nothing transports quite like good classical piano music.

Olivier Messiaen

I usually save classical music for the indoor winter months, but as I get older and weirder, I’ve found that midsummer classical music like this really hits the spot.

As a few people pointed out last time, the pieces I gravitate toward tend to be the slower movements—especially the adagios and andantes. Once I get on a roll with these quieter pieces, I don’t like the mood to be interrupted by anything resembling… excitement.

So, for anyone who could use a little midsummer reset, this playlist should do the trick.

Dmitri Shostakovich

If you're not familiar with much of this music, this playlist is a good place to start. It spans from the 17th century to the 21st, with plenty of stops along the way.

Enjoy.
