Great episode! While I was in the thick of it with the beatle mania I found it interesting that you mention that Paul's contribution on Abbey Road doesn't hit you on an emotional level amd that's why you don't like it.
Abbey Road was always my most listened to Beatles album growing up, but after watching the Get Back doc, everything in it seemed so sterile because it was no longer The Beatles live band. So its easy to agree with you.
Although the emotional resonance that I have with it now is almost solely from the context of its popularity, among my family and friends around me that adore The Beatles and sing their songs in pubs. It makes me love songs like Maxwells Silver Hammer and You Never Give Me Your Money because they're so fun to sing with everyone that celebrates The Beatles. I don't think many people return to Abbey Road for its emotional depth or vulnerability. So it makes me wonder what kind of grandiosity or corniness Paul's stuff has for you, in comparison to say your relationship with some of the corny songs on your New Year playlist. And if you've explored those Paul songs in that context. I can't remember if Hey Jude was on your New Years or Emotional indulgence Playlist. But I hope you get my train of thought! I love this. Yeah you know, it’s funny, growing up we didn’t listen to Abbey road much. So I don’t have those nostalgic associations at all. I’d never realized that. The rest of the Beatles catalog is much more deeply ingrained. So yeah I’m likely judging it a bit more coldly. Great point!!
