My guest today is Naomi Fry — staff writer at The New Yorker, co-host of the great New Yorker podcast Critics at Large, and host of the recent (very delightful) podcast series Really? The Doors (on which I was a guest with Lucinda Williams - so fun!)
It was a total hoot talking with Naomi about the most important topic in all of music: love songs.
We get into heartbreak anthems, teenage mixtapes, and how love songs work differently once you’re an adult — with detours through Madonna, classical music, Sex and the City, Andy Warhol, Billy Joel, Whitney Houston, and lots more.
We also get into her recent appearance as Gwyneth Paltrow’s assistant in Marty Supreme, and our shared dreams of a future on the silver screen.
Sometimes I forget that not everyone’s heart naturally drifts toward the soupy slow jams of the 1950s, so getting Naomi’s fresh perspective on all this lovey-dovey music was a treat.
Enjoy!

10 New Songs to Love. I’ve started a new Sunday subscribers-only playlist series. Every Sunday, you’ll wake up to a fresh playlist in your inbox. They’ll be themeless, and delightfully different from anything we’re listening to on the radio show.
